Meaning · English
Then there was neither being nor non-being, no world of air, no heaven above. What enclosed it, and where, in whose keeping? Were there waters, deep past sounding?
There was no death then, nor deathlessness. Nothing marked night off from day. That One breathed, windless, by its own power. Nothing else existed beyond it.
In the beginning darkness was hidden by darkness; all this was unmarked water. What lay covered by emptiness, that One, was born through the power of heat.
In the beginning desire arose, the first seed of mind. Seers, searching their hearts with wisdom, found the bond of what is in what is not.
Their cord was stretched across. Was there a below? Was there an above? There were seed-bearers; there were great powers: self-power beneath, the reaching-forth beyond.
Who truly knows, who here could say, from where it was born, from where this creation came? The gods came after its sending forth. So who knows from where it arose?
This creation, where it came from, whether it was founded or not: its overseer in the highest heaven surely knows, or perhaps he does not.
