Meaning · English
Look at peacock feathers, their many-coloured rounds, and see five emptinesses. For one who rests in that unsurpassed emptiness, entry into the heart can happen.
The verse begins with a plain object: peacock feathers, each with a coloured round, the eye-spot, at its tip. Three words carry it. Mandala here is just a circle, a round with a centre. Shunya is emptiness, a hollow, a place where nothing is held. Hridaya is the heart, the middle of a person, not only the chest. The first line tells you to see the feather's rounds as five emptinesses. The colours are rich, but each ring closes around a centre that holds nothing. The second line says what happens to one who stays with that: the attention settles in the emptiness the text calls unsurpassed, with nothing above it to reach for, and from there entry into the heart can occur. Why this works as a doorway follows Bhairava's answer to Bhairavi. He does not send you away from the ordinary moment. He opens it from inside. A feather is an ordinary thing, and looking is an ordinary act. The text asks you to look until the hollow at the middle of each round is what you see. The vividness of the colour gets you looking, and the emptiness lets the looking stop being about something.
1. Sit with a peacock feather, or a clear picture of one, at a comfortable distance and let your eyes rest on the rounds near its tip. 2. Look at the colours until they are familiar. Then look at the centre of each round, the hollow the colours close around. 3. Let each round show you its emptiness, five of them, without counting or naming. 4. When the eyes jump or the mind wanders, come back to the nearest centre. 5. Let the looking go quiet and rest in the emptiness. Stay there, attending in the heart. 6. When you are ready to stop, let the feather go from view and sit a moment before you move.
In the tradition's account, the mind moves because it keeps finding things to hold. A colour, a shape, a name. Here it is given something vivid and then shown that the vivid thing is ringed around a centre with nothing in it. The support drops away, the movement of the mind stops, and what is left is awareness knowing itself. The text calls that entry into the heart. A sitter will usually notice other things first. The eyes want to dart from ring to ring, and the colour keeps pulling the attention back out. The jaw and the muscles around the eyes may hold on, and softening them helps the gaze settle. Small signs it is working: the colours go quiet, the centres seem to open, and for a moment there is no commentary on what you see. The usual ways it goes wrong are counting the five as a task, straining to produce emptiness, or reading the stillness as a blank and then waiting to be shown something.
