Space in every direction

Meaning · English

In your own body, picture space in all directions at once. Free of thought and of support, the mind rests there, and for one who does this, all of space comes into play.

Three words carry it. Dharana is a holding: the mind fixed on one object. Vyoman, space, is the object here, the open room in which everything else appears. Nirvikalpa means without alternatives: no this-or-that, no sorting. The verse asks you to take your own body as the place, then picture space in every direction together, front, back, above, below, left and right, in a single moment. Not one direction after another. Then the mind is called anaashrita, without a prop: it leans on no image, no word, no choice. For one who rests like this, the verse says all of space comes into play around that stillness. The logic of the doorway is Bhairava's own: you do not leave the ordinary moment. Your body, where you already are, is opened from inside until it has no wall. A body with edges and a mind with edges turn out to be one openness. Shivopadhyaya's commentary reads the space as the inner space of awareness, which is why the whole of it moves from one resting mind.

1. Sit or stand comfortably and let your eyes soften or close. 2. Feel your own body where it is. Let it be the center of the picture. 3. Imagine space reaching out in every direction together: front, back, above, below, left and right. Do not go through them one by one. 4. Let go of any word or image that tries to hold the space in place. 5. When the mind picks one direction or starts to think, return to all directions at once. 6. Stop when the attention wanders too much to hold the picture, or when the time you set ends.

The tradition's account: the mind moves by choosing between one thing and another. When every direction is held at once, there is nothing to choose between, so the movement stops. The support drops away, because space gives the mind nothing to grip. What is left is awareness knowing itself, and the text says everything then moves within it. What a sitter tends to notice is different and more modest. Picking one direction at a time comes first, and the attention slides from front to back like a lantern. Holding all of them together is hard, and the mind often swaps the picture for a thought about space. A small sign it is working is that the body's outline feels less certain, or the attention feels wide rather than aimed. Common ways it goes wrong: straining to make the picture bright, drifting into a daydream, or going blank and dull. Dullness is not the same as openness.
