Back and root together
Vijnana Bhairava 44
Meaning · English
One who holds the emptiness of the back and the emptiness of the root in mind at the same moment, with a power that does not lean on the body, becomes one whose mind is empty.
Two places are named. The back is the side of you that you cannot see. The root is the base, the lowest point where the body begins. The verse asks you to find each as empty, a void, which is the sense of shunya: a place with nothing fixed in it for the mind to hold. Then comes bhavayet, to bring something into being in awareness, to hold it in mind until it is present. Yugapad means at one moment, not first one and then the other. So the instruction is to keep both voids in awareness at once. The last clause says the power that does this is independent of the body. Shakti here is the capacity of awareness itself, and it needs no help from muscle or posture. The result is a mind that is shunya, emptied of its usual objects. The logic is the text's own: you do not leave the ordinary moment to find this. You open it from inside, using the body you already sit in. Two places held together leave attention no single thing to grip, and the grasping mind has nowhere to settle. Shivopadhyaya's commentary is not quoted here, since it is not printed with the verse.
1. Sit with your back free of any support, so the back of the body is open behind you. 2. Turn attention to the space behind your back. Let it be empty, with nothing to grasp. 3. Keep that, and also attend to the root, the base where you sit. Let that be empty too. 4. Hold both at the same moment. Do not move between them. 5. When the mind wanders, return to both at once, without tensing. 6. Stop when you cannot hold both, or when the time you set ends.
The tradition's account: the mind moves because it moves toward one object and then another. Holding two voids at once gives it no single support. The movement stops, the body drops out as a basis, and awareness is left knowing itself. The text calls this power independent of the body, so the practice rests on awareness, not on effort in the limbs. What a sitter tends to notice: the back is hard to feel at first. It shows up as a vague blankness behind you, or as pressure where you lean. The root is easier but dull. The first difficulty is that attention jumps between them, which is the very thing the verse rules out. A small sign it is working is a moment when both are held and no one is choosing between them. Usual ways it goes wrong: tensing the back to feel it, picturing a hole as a thing to look at, or going vague and drowsy. The attention then goes slack instead of wide.
