Meaning · English
Hold steady the emptiness of the back, the emptiness of the root, the emptiness of the heart. Because all are held at once, thought falls still, and from that stillness thought-free awareness rises.
Three places in the body are named: the back (prishtha), the root (mula) and the heart (hrit). Each is called shunya, which means empty, hollow, open space. It does not mean nothing there. It means seen as room instead of as a solid thing. Bhavayet means to make present and keep present, so the emptiness is held in awareness and not argued into being. The word steady (sthiram) says it is held without flicker. Then comes the key clause: all three together. A mind that builds thoughts has to work one thing at a time, picking, comparing, naming. Three places at once leave it no single object to grab, so the picking stops. That stopped state is nirvikalpa, thought without alternatives, with no this-versus-that being sorted. The last line says from that, thought-free awareness rises. It is not made. It shows up once the sorting has nowhere to stand. By the text's logic this works as a doorway because the body is already here in every ordinary moment. Nothing has to be fetched. The usual moment is opened from inside, and the opening is the same body, looked at as space.
1. Sit with your back upright and still, eyes soft or closed. 2. Feel the back. Let it be hollow, a space and not a wall. 3. Feel the root, the base of the body. Let it be hollow too. 4. Feel the heart, the middle of the chest, as hollow. Now hold all three together, not one after another. 5. When the mind wanders, notice it, then gather the three emptinesses again in one glance. 6. Stop when the holding loosens or the time is up, and sit a moment before moving.
The tradition's account: the mind moves by fixing on one support and jumping to the next. Give it three empty supports held in one glance and the jumping has nothing to land on. The support drops away, the movement stops, and awareness is left knowing itself, which the text calls thought-free. A sitter tends to notice something plainer. The first try is lopsided. Attention holds the chest and loses the back, or catches the back and the other two fade. Holding all three feels like looking at a wide field instead of a point. Small signs it is working: the attention stops flicking, the body feels less like an outline and more like a room, and a thought may begin and fade before it gets going. The usual ways it goes wrong: forcing a blank, which brings tension in the face and throat. Or turning the emptiness into a picture and then staring at the picture. Sleepiness also comes, and so does a dull numbness mistaken for the real thing.
