The verse and its meaning · Vijnana Bhairava Tantra · Emptiness

One Moment, Whole Body

Vijnana Bhairava 46

Meaning · English

In the body's place, let him dwell on emptiness alone, for no more than a moment. Free of constructs, the one who is free of constructs shares the nature of what is free of constructs.

Three words carry it. Tanūdeśa is the body's region, the place where the body is felt. Shunyata is emptiness, the sense of nothing there to grasp. Nirvikalpa is the state without vikalpa, the mind's habit of cutting experience into this and that and attaching a name to each piece. The verse asks for emptiness in the body's place, held for a kshana, a single instant. Not minutes of effort. One moment, and only emptiness in it. The last line says the same word three times. The moment is without constructs. The one who rests in it is without constructs. What he then shares in is the nature of the constructless itself. Nothing is added from outside. The moment is not a step toward some other state. For that instant, the state simply is that. This works as a doorway because the body is the most ordinary thing there is, and every moment already has it in it. Look into the body's place and find no solid thing to name, and the naming stops by itself. The text's logic is that the ordinary moment, opened from inside, already holds what is being sought.

1. Sit or stand comfortably and let your eyes rest, closed or open. 2. Bring your attention to the body's place, the whole felt space of it, without picking out a part. 3. Look for something solid there to name. Let it be empty. 4. Stay with that for a single moment. Do not stretch it. 5. When thoughts or pictures come, begin again with one new moment. 6. Stop after a few minutes, when the moments start to feel forced.

In the tradition's own account, the mind moves by making constructs. Each one needs something to lean on, and the body is the main support. When the body's place is seen as empty, the support drops away, the movement settles, and awareness is left knowing itself. A sitter usually notices something smaller. At first the body turns into a picture or a list of parts, and that is still construction. Attention keeps trying to hold the emptiness as an object, which spoils it. The small sign that it is working is a brief gap where nothing is being described, then the commentary returns. The usual errors are stretching the instant into a strained stare, going blank and dull, and judging the moment afterward as good or poor. The verse asks for one moment, so the return of thought is not a failure.
