Sky Filling the Flesh
Vijnana Bhairava 47
Meaning · English
Every substance lodged in the body is pervaded by sky, doe-eyed one. Contemplate it so, and that contemplation becomes steady.
Three words carry it. Dravya is substance, whatever has stuff to it: everything the body is made of. Vyapta means pervaded, filled through, the way water fills a sponge. Bhavana is bringing something into being in the mind by holding it there, a settled imagining rather than a passing thought. Viyat is sky, open space. The verse says that all the substance in the body is filled through with space. The body keeps its shape, but nothing in it is without sky. Then comes the instruction: contemplate it that way. Then the last clause: that contemplation becomes steady. The steadiness is not asked for. It is what follows from staying with the picture. The logic is that the body is the one thing you are sure is solid and yours. When that solidity is seen as shot through with openness, the mind loses its firmest object to grip. Nothing is added from outside. The ordinary body, already here, is opened from inside, and attention that had hold of the solid has nowhere hard to rest.
1. Sit or stand so the body can be left alone, spine upright without stiffness, eyes soft or closed. 2. Bring to mind what the body is made of: its weight, its firm and wet parts, everything that feels like stuff. 3. Think of sky filling all of it, through every part at once, with the stuff still there and the sky running through it. 4. Stay with that picture, and when the mind wanders, notice it and return to the sky within the body. 5. If the picture goes thin, go back to step two, then to step three. 6. Stop when the sit's time is up, and let the picture go before moving.
The tradition's account: the mind moves because it grips objects, and the body is the first and nearest object. When the body is seen as filled with space, the grip has nothing firm to take, the movement of the mind slows, and awareness is left with less to lean on. Steadiness comes from that, not from effort. What a sitter tends to notice: at first the picture comes and goes. The mind drifts to a thought, then back, and the body feels as solid as before. Often one patch, a hand or the chest, goes loose or light first, while the rest stays heavy. Small signs it is working are edges feeling less sharp and the urge to shift lessening. The usual ways it goes wrong are forcing the image, which tightens the face and jaw, or turning it into a thought about space instead of a looking at the body. Some sitters find it dizzying and need to come back to ordinary sensation for a while.
