Skin as a Wall

Meaning · English

Inside the body, think of the skin as a wall. Within that wall there is nothing at all. Meditating on it this way, you come to share in what is no object of meditation.

Three words carry the verse. Tvac is skin, the body's outer layer. Bhitti is a wall, a plain surface that only encloses. Adhyeya is what is meant to be meditated on, an object held before the mind, and the verse ends by saying you become a sharer in the non-object, the part of you that has nothing to hold. The plain sense goes clause by clause. First, inside the body, you think of the skin as a wall. You do not look at your skin as flesh or as a boundary of self, only as a wall, the way a room has walls. Second, within that wall there is nothing. The bones, organs and breath are not examined. The wall is held in mind and the inside is left empty. Third, as you meditate this way, the mind loses its usual object. A meditation usually has something in front of it, and here the something is emptiness itself, so the support gives way. What remains is the one who was meditating. This works as a doorway because the body is the most ordinary thing you carry. Bhairava's answer is to open it from inside: the same body, felt as a wall around nothing, becomes the way out of having objects.

1. Sit with your back easy and your eyes open softly or closed. Let your hands rest. 2. Bring your attention to your skin, all the way around the body. Think of it as a wall, nothing more. 3. Turn to what the wall encloses. Do not look at organs or breath. Hold the inside as empty. 4. When a picture of bones or heartbeat appears, notice it and return to the wall around nothing. 5. When you find yourself holding the emptiness as an object, let go of holding and stay. 6. Stop when the sit feels finished, or after about ten minutes.

The tradition's account runs like this. The mind moves by taking up objects. When the body is seen as a wall with nothing inside, the mind has nothing to take up. Its movement stops for lack of support. What is left is awareness knowing itself, without anything set before it. What a sitter tends to notice is more modest. At first the mind keeps filling the wall with things: a heartbeat, a stomach, a picture of organs. These are not wrong, just the mind busy. The skin is easier to hold than the emptiness, so attention often clings to the surface and the inside stays vague. Small signs it is working are a pause where nothing is being looked at, a softer sense of where the body ends, and a quiet that does not come from effort. It usually goes wrong in two ways: the sitter tries to force a blank, which tightens the face and jaw, or drifts into a dull haze and mistakes it for emptiness. Nothing here is promised.
