Meaning · English
Great goddess, hold this whole world in mind as empty. Let the mind itself dissolve right there. From that dissolving, it becomes a vessel for the merging.
The verse gives three clauses. First, think of this whole world as shunya. The word means empty, void, a thing with nothing set in it. The instruction is to hold the world in mind that way, all of it, as one thing, not item by item. Second, the mind goes into dissolution there, in that very place. The word laya means melting or sinking: the mind does not leave, it settles into what it is looking at. Third, from that, the mind becomes a vessel for laya, a fit container for the merging. Bhairava is not saying the world is gone. He asks for a way of holding it in thought until the thinking itself loosens. The doorway is the ordinary world, since it is the world you are already looking at that gets opened from inside. Shivopadhyaya's commentary is not quoted here, and nothing is put in his mouth.
1. Sit or stand wherever you are, eyes open or closed, as you like. 2. Bring to mind everything around you and beyond it, the whole world as one. 3. Hold all of it as empty, with nothing set in it. 4. When the mind starts naming things, let it settle back into that same emptiness instead of chasing the names. 5. Stay with it until the mind has quietened, then stop without hurry.
The tradition's account: the mind lives by grabbing at things. When the whole world is held as empty, nothing is left for the mind to grab. Its movement stops, the support drops away, and awareness is left knowing itself. This is the text's teaching about how the mind merges. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. At first the idea of emptiness is just another thought, and attention keeps picking at it. The world feels solid, and the mind argues. Often it makes a blank and goes dull, which is not the same thing. A small sign it is working is that objects stay in view but stop pulling, and the thoughts about them thin out. Attention may rest without effort for a moment. The usual ways it goes wrong are straining to produce emptiness, or drifting into sleepiness and taking that for dissolving.
