Gaze Into the Pot

Vijnana Bhairava 59

Meaning · English

Let the gaze rest on a pot or any such vessel, leaving the wall behind it. Then the mind dissolves into that object in an instant, and from that dissolving you become one with it.

Three words carry the verse. Drishti is the gaze, the seeing itself. Bhajana is a vessel, a container, here a pot or something like it. Laya is dissolving, the way salt goes into water. The verse also says to leave the wall: the background drops out of attention and only the vessel is left. The clauses run in order. Put the gaze on a pot. Let the wall behind it go. In that same instant the mind dissolves into the pot, and from that dissolving you become made of it, one with it. Nothing is added to the pot. The mind is simply set down in it. This works as a doorway because the pot is an ordinary thing you have looked at a thousand times. The text's logic is that the ordinary moment opens from inside. When the gaze has one object and nothing around it, the mind has nowhere to move to, and its movement dissolves. Shivopadhyaya's commentary reads the vessel as a support for the gaze, which is given up once the mind has dissolved.

1. Sit comfortably with a plain pot or cup a short distance in front of you, against a bare wall or cloth. 2. Rest your gaze on the vessel. Let the wall behind it fade without pushing it away. 3. Keep the eyes soft. Look at the pot without naming it. 4. When the mind wanders, bring the gaze back to the vessel and let it settle there again. 5. When the pot and the looking seem to stop being two things, stay with that. 6. When the time is up, let the gaze loosen and close your eyes for a moment.

The tradition's account: the mind moves because it jumps from object to object. Give it one object with nothing beside it and the jumping ends. The mind dissolves into that support, then the support itself falls away, and awareness is left knowing itself. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. At first the eyes want to wander to the wall, the window, a sound. The pot starts to look flat or strange, as a word does when repeated. The eyes may water or the gaze may blur. Thoughts still come, but they feel less attached to anything. Small signs it is working: the edges of the room soften, time stops being counted, and looking becomes easy rather than effortful. The usual ways it goes wrong are staring hard, which tightens the face and brow, and naming the pot in your head, which keeps the mind busy. Some people also drift into a dull haze and call it stillness. The difference is that the looking stays awake.
