Meaning · English
Let the gaze fall on a place with no trees, no mountain, no wall. When the mind's state has melted away, the movements of thought are worn down to nothing.
Take the words one at a time. Drishti is sight, the gaze. Nirvriksha means without trees: nir is without, vriksha is tree. Desha is a place, a stretch of space. Vritti is a turning, a movement of the mind. Each thought, each grabbing of an object, is one turn. Kshina means worn away, used up. Vilina means melted, dissolved into something else. Manasa bhava is a state of mind, a mental condition. Now the clauses. Choose a place where the eye finds no tree, no mountain, no wall, nothing of that sort. Send the gaze out into it. Ordinarily the eye lands on an object, the mind names it and moves to the next one. Here nothing gives the eye a landing. So the mind's state dissolves, and with it the turnings wear out. Nothing is added. Only the supports go. That is why it works as a doorway. Looking already happens all day. This opens the same act from inside: seeing with no thing to hold it. The mind, which lives on what it grasps, has no grasp left, and what remains is the plain fact of looking.
1. Find a place with a wide view of empty space, such as open sky or a bare plain, or a blank room with the walls out of focus. Sit or stand so the neck is easy. 2. Let your gaze go out into it. Rest it on no tree, no hill, no wall, nothing with an edge. 3. Keep the eyes soft. When they start hunting for something to hold, let them loosen again. 4. When a thought pulls you away, notice it and let the gaze go back out to the open space. 5. When the thinking has quieted, stay there without adding anything. 6. Stop when the time you set is over. Let your eyes close or move slowly.
The tradition's account runs like this. The mind moves only by taking an object. Remove every object the eye could take, and the movement has nothing to feed on. The mind's state melts, its turnings wear out, and awareness is left knowing itself, with no support under it. The text teaches this as a dissolving, not as a achievement of effort. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. At first the eye keeps hunting for an edge, a cloud, a speck, and the face tightens around the eyes. Thoughts come in as usual and the gaze snaps back to them. The first small sign is that the eyes soften and stop searching. The forehead and jaw may let go a little. The thinking may thin out, or each thought may seem to arrive from farther away. The breath is not mentioned, so it can be left alone. The usual failures are staring hard, which only makes a new object of the effort, and drifting into a dull blank. A blank gaze is not the same as an open one.
