Gazing at Clear Sky

Vijnana Bhairava 84

Meaning · English

Look at the stainless sky and keep the gaze unbroken. With the self gone still, in that very instant, goddess, you would arrive at Bhairava's own form.

Three words carry the verse. Akasha is sky or open space, the one thing in view with nothing in it. Vimala means without stain, so no cloud, no bird, no mark for the eye to catch on. Nirantara means without a gap: the look is not broken by glancing off and returning. Then stabdhatma, the self made still, from a root for being stopped or fixed. Bhairava is the name for the ultimate reality, here as the form the practitioner reaches. The clauses run in order. You look at spotless sky. You let the look run on without a break. Because nothing in the sky gives the mind a thing to pick up, the self goes still. At that moment, with no delay, you come into Bhairava's form. The text puts no waiting period between the stillness and the arrival. It works as a doorway because the sky is already in front of you in any ordinary day. Nothing has to be built or imagined. The usual habit of the mind is to hop from object to object. An empty, continuous view gives that habit nothing to hop to, so the stillness comes from inside the looking itself.

1. Sit or stand where you can see open sky with no cloud in it. Let your neck be long and your jaw loose. 2. Rest your eyes on the empty sky. Do not aim at any spot in it. 3. Keep the look going without a break. Blink when you need to and return at once. 4. When a thought or a speck pulls you, notice it and let the look go back to the plain sky. 5. If your eyes strain or your brow tightens, soften the face and begin the look again. 6. Stop after about ten minutes, or sooner if the gaze has gone fully still. Let your eyes close or move on gently.

The tradition's account is short. The mind moves because the eye keeps landing on separate things. Give the look no object and no break, and that movement stops. The support the self leaned on, a thing seen and a seer set against it, drops away. What is left is awareness knowing itself, which the text calls Bhairava's form. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. The eyes tire first, and the urge to blink or look away is strong. Then the mind adds a cloud, a bird, a speck, or a comment about how it is going. Small signs of it working are these: the edges of the view soften, thoughts thin out, and the looking seems to come from no particular spot. The jaw, brow and neck stay loose while the gaze stays steady. It usually goes wrong in a few ways. The eyes get fixed and glaring, the forehead tightens, or the person drifts into a daydream. Another is waiting for a result, which turns the sky back into an object.
