Everything Melting into the Head

Vijnana Bhairava 85

Meaning · English

Let everything that fills space be felt as dissolved in the head, and let that dissolved whole be held as Bhairava. Then enter all of it, the light that has Bhairava's form.

Three words carry the verse. Linam means melted, merged, the way salt goes into water. Murdhni means in the head, at its highest point. Bhavayet comes from bhava, a felt state, and means to bring something into being by feeling it, not just thinking it. Bhairava is the name for the awake, unlimited reality that the whole teaching is pointing at, and bhairavatvena means as Bhairava-ness, as that quality. So the clauses run in order. Everything that fills space, the room, the sky, the world, is felt as melted into the head. That melted whole is then held as Bhairava, not as many separate things. Then comes the last step: enter that whole, which is light shaped as Bhairava. The word for enter means to go in completely, not to look at from outside. It works as a doorway because nothing new is added. The world you already see is gathered into one point of your own body and recognised from there. The ordinary moment is opened from inside, and the one who was standing apart from it is inside it.

1. Sit upright and comfortable, eyes open softly or closed, whichever keeps you steady. 2. Take in everything around you: the room, the sounds, the space past the walls. 3. Let all of it melt toward the head, as if the whole of space were pouring into that one place. 4. Hold what has gathered as Bhairava, one awake whole, not as many things. 5. Enter it. Stop watching it from outside and rest inside the light. 6. When the mind wanders back to separate objects, gather them again. Stop when the sit feels finished.

The tradition's account: the mind keeps moving because it keeps reaching out to separate objects. When all objects are drawn into one place and seen as one reality, the reaching has nothing to hold. The support of separateness drops away, and awareness is left knowing itself as the light in which everything appeared. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. At first the picture is thin. You say the words and nothing gathers, or the room keeps sliding back out into things. Attention tends to jump between the head and the objects. The head may feel full or slightly pressed, and that is only the attention resting there. A small sign it is working is that objects stop pulling at you separately, and the sense of looking from a spot behind the eyes softens. Usual ways it goes wrong: forcing a vivid image, tightening the brow, or turning the whole thing into a thought about oneness. When that happens the gathering has become a concept and the felt part has gone.
