Dwelling in the dark night

Vijnana Bhairava 87

Meaning · English

In just the same way, in the long dark night as the dark half of the month begins, one who holds that darkness steadily in mind, for a long time, arrives at the form of Bhairava.

Three words carry it. Bhavayan is holding something in mind until it is present, from bhava, a state of being. It is more than thinking about it. Taimira means belonging to darkness, and rupa is form, the way a thing shows itself. So the darkness is treated as a form with a presence of its own, and not as an empty gap. Bhairava is the name for the absolute, the ground of everything. His form is what the practice arrives at. The clauses run in order. The night is a bad, heavy one, and it comes at the start of the dark fortnight, when the moon is waning and the sky is at its blackest. Staying with that darkness takes time. The text says ciram, for long. The result is stated plainly: the one who does this reaches Bhairava's form. The doorway works by the text's own logic. Ordinary darkness takes away the separate things the eye usually grabs. With no objects to divide the view, the mind has nothing to sort. An everyday night, entered from inside and held without turning away, becomes the place where the ground shows. The verse begins with 'just the same way', so it repeats an approach already begun: take an ordinary condition and stay in it until it opens.

1. Choose a night with little light, ideally in the dark half of the month, and sit where you will not be disturbed. 2. Keep your eyes open and rest them on the darkness as a whole. Do not look for outlines. 3. Treat the dark as something present, a form in front of you, and stay with it. 4. When pictures or thoughts come, notice that you have left, and return to the dark. 5. Stay for a long while without hurrying to a result. 6. When the time you set has passed, stop and sit a moment before moving.

The tradition's account: the mind moves by taking up one object after another. In deep darkness the objects drop out. When attention rests on the darkness itself and does not hunt for shapes, the movement slows and stops, and awareness is left knowing itself. The text calls that Bhairava's form. A sitter usually notices something simpler first. The eyes strain to find outlines, and the mind fills the black with faces, shapes and worries. Boredom or sleepiness comes soon after. Small signs that it is working are a softer gaze, a sense of the dark as one even surface instead of a wall, and fewer pictures arriving. The common ways it goes wrong are staring hard, drifting into sleep, or turning the dark into an idea about the infinite. The verse asks for a long stay. Short, restless visits tend to show only the strain.
