Meaning · English
In just the same way, first close the eyes. Let a blackish sheen lie before you. Spread out Bhairava's form in it, and holding that form in mind, become made of it.
The verse takes the darkness practice of the previous verse and moves it indoors. Nothing outside has to be dark. The eyes close, and what is left in front of you is a dim, blackish sheen. That is the given material. Three words carry it. Bhairava is the name for the ultimate reality in its fearsome, all-containing aspect, so his rupa, his form, is not a picture of a person but the whole of what is. Prasarya means to spread out or extend: the form is not squeezed into a point but laid wide across the dark in front of you. Bhavayan comes from bhava, a becoming or a state, and means to bring something into being by holding it in mind. Tanmaya, the last word, means made of that: formed of the same stuff. So the clauses run in order. Close the eyes first. Take the dark that appears. Extend Bhairava's form across it. Keep contemplating, and the one who contemplates becomes made of what is contemplated. The doorway works because nothing is added from outside. Every closing of the eyes already shows this dark. Bhairava's answer is that this ordinary moment, opened from inside, is enough.
1. Sit or lie where you will not be disturbed, and close your eyes. 2. Let the eyelids rest. Look at the dark in front of you, the blackish sheen, without pressing on it. 3. Spread Bhairava's form across that whole dark, wide rather than small, the way a cloth is laid out. 4. Keep holding it in mind. When you notice you have drifted into a thought or a story, return to the dark and the spread form. 5. Stay with it until you are made of it, not looking at it. Then open your eyes slowly.
The tradition's account: the mind normally moves from one object to the next, and that movement is what hides the self. Here the mind is given one wide, featureless support. When the form is spread across the dark, the movement settles, the support itself falls away, and awareness is left knowing itself. The text calls that being made of Bhairava. What a sitter tends to notice: closed eyes rarely give a clean black. There are drifting patches, faint colour, and sometimes a pressure behind the lids. Many people start by straining the forehead or squeezing the eyelids, and the dark gets busier. Letting the eyes go soft helps. The attention often jumps between the dark and a mental picture of a figure, and the picture can feel like a second task. Small signs that it is working are a dark that feels wider than the face, less effort in holding it, and a sense of being inside the field rather than looking at it. The usual ways it goes wrong are forcing an image, drifting into sleep, or waiting for something to happen.
