Sky Without Walls

Vijnana Bhairava 92

Meaning · English

Hold yourself as sky-shaped, untouched by the directions around it. Then awareness, resting on nothing, shows you your own nature.

Three words carry it. Vyoma is sky or open space, and akara is shape, so the self is held as having the form of sky. Disha are the directions, the ten ways space is divided; anavrita means uncovered, so no direction closes the self in. Chiti is awareness itself, and nirashraya means without a support to lean on. The verse asks for the self, not an object, to be seen as open like sky and fenced by no side, above, below or around. Then awareness is said to be a power, shakti, that has no prop. It does not stand on a thought, a body outline or a place. When nothing is left to lean on, that awareness shows the sitter their own nature. The doorway is the ordinary sense of being 'here, inside this boundary.' Opening that from inside, by picturing no edge at all, leaves only the knowing. Shivopadhyaya's commentary reads the unsupported awareness as the goddess power herself revealing the self's form.

1. Sit or stand with your eyes open or closed, whichever keeps you steady. 2. Take yourself as open like sky, with no front edge, no back, no top and no floor. 3. Do not look at this sky. Be the space that it is. 4. When a direction or the body's outline returns, let it come, then open again. 5. Rest in the knowing that leans on nothing. 6. Stop when you start to drift or the picture goes flat.

The tradition's account: the mind moves by grabbing a support, a thing, a direction, a shape of the body. Picture the self as sky and every support drops away. Awareness is then left knowing itself, and that is taken as the nature being shown. A sitter usually notices something simpler. The skin and the edges of the body stay in attention at first, and the picture of open space keeps turning into a picture of an object, a blue sky seen from outside. That is the common slip: you watch sky instead of being it. Another is a vague drifting that feels like sleep. Small signs it is working are modest: the sense of where the body ends loosens, the front and back of the head matter less, and the thinking goes quiet without being pushed. Attention seems to rest without gripping anything. It comes and goes, and often the moment you notice it, it closes again.
