Mind Placed in Outer Space

Meaning · English

Place the mind in outer space: lasting, without support, empty, all-pervading, free of any dividing. Having set it there, enter the spaceless.

Take the words apart first. Akasha is space, the open room in which things appear. Shunya is empty, with nothing in it to hold. Nirashraya means without a support, nothing to lean on. Vyapaka means pervading, spread through everything. Kalana is the act of measuring, counting and fixing, so kalanojjhita means left behind by that act. Nitya means lasting. The verse asks you to take the outer sky, which has all these qualities, and put the mind there. It is lasting, supportless, empty, everywhere, and nothing in it can be marked off. Once the mind rests in it, you enter what has no space at all. The logic is simple. A mind that rests in something with no edge and no handle has nothing to grip, so its gripping loosens by itself. The doorway is an ordinary glance at the sky, opened from inside. The text offers no other step. Shivopadhyaya's commentary is not quoted here, and nothing is claimed for it.

1. Sit or stand where you can see open sky, a roof, a field, or a wide window. 2. Let your eyes rest on the empty part of the sky, away from clouds, trees and wires. 3. Place your mind in that openness and let it be as wide as the sky is, without a centre. 4. When the mind catches on a thing, return it to the empty part, gently. 5. After a while, stop looking at the sky and let the mind stay where it was placed, with no space to point to. 6. Stop when the sitting feels finished.

The tradition's account: the mind moves because it holds objects. Give it a support-free, boundless object and the movement has nothing to catch on. The support drops away. What is left is awareness knowing itself, which the text calls the spaceless. A sitter tends to notice something plainer. The eyes want to land on a cloud, a bird, a wire, and the mind follows. The first difficulty is that the sky turns into a picture, a flat blue thing you are looking at. Small signs it is working: the gaze softens, the edges of the view stop mattering, and thoughts feel farther off. The usual errors are staring hard, which tightens the face and forehead, and inventing an inner space instead of using the open one. Some sitters find the sense of looking at space fades and only the looking remains. That is not a failure.
