Alone Before the Worlds
Aitareya Upanishad 1.1.1
Meaning · English
In the beginning all of this was the Self, one and alone. Nothing else existed, not a thing that stirred. The Self considered: 'Let me make worlds now.'
Everything that exists now, the sky, the earth, people, was at first only the Self. There was nothing beside it, not even anything that stirred or blinked. Here it is pictured as filling everything because nothing else is there yet. Its first act is not building but looking and forming an intention. Worlds are not yet made. There is only one presence, and a thought rising in it about what to bring out.
A builder stands on an empty plot before a single brick arrives. The house exists only as a plan in the builder's head, and the first real step is the decision to build. The Self is like that builder at the moment of deciding, with one difference: here there is no plot either, no ground, nothing outside the builder at all.
