Waters Above, Waters Below

Aitareya Upanishad 1.1.2

Meaning · English

He made these realms: high waters above the sky, resting on it; light-rays, the middle air; death, the earth; and the waters beneath it.

Once the Self has decided to make worlds, it makes four, stacked from top to bottom. Highest is a store of water beyond the sky, and the sky is the floor that holds it up. Below that lies the open air between sky and ground, filled with rays of light. Next comes the earth, named simply as the place where things die. Under the earth there are waters again. Each realm is named by what fills it or what happens there.

Picture an old village house: a water tank on the roof, sunlit rooms below it, a floor where the family lives and its elders grow old, and a well sunk under the yard. The roof tank is the high waters on the sky, the bright rooms the middle air, the floor the mortal earth, the well the waters beneath.
