Guardians for the Worlds
Aitareya Upanishad 1.1.3
Meaning · English
He looked and thought: 'These are the worlds. Now let me make guardians for the worlds.' From the waters themselves he lifted up a person and gave it form.
The Self has already made the worlds: the waters above the sky, the bright middle air, the mortal earth, the waters below. Now it looks them over and decides they need keepers, powers that will watch over each region. It does not make these keepers out of nothing. It reaches into the waters, the raw stuff it began with, lifts out a person, and presses that person into a firm shape. The keepers are still to come. First there is a body for them to come from.
A potter dips both hands into a tub of slurry, lifts out a dripping handful, and squeezes it until it holds together as one solid lump. Nothing is carved yet, but every cup will come from it. The waters are the slurry. The person lifted out and made firm is the lump the keepers will be shaped from.
