Meaning · English
He held the figure in steady heat until it split open like an egg: mouth, speech, fire; nostrils, breath, wind; eyes, sight, sun; heart, mind, moon; on down to seed and water.
The Self pours concentrated heat into a shaped figure, and it cracks open in eight places. Each opening follows the same order: a body part, then the power that works through it, then a force in the wider world. Mouth gives speech, speech gives fire. Nostrils, breath, wind. Eyes, sight, sun. Ears, hearing, the directions. Skin, hair, plants and trees. Heart, mind, moon. Navel, the downward breath, death. The sex organ, seed, water. The great forces come out of the body's functions.
Picture a house at dusk as the lamps come on. A window appears in the wall, light passes through it, and a bright patch spreads across the yard outside. Each opening of the body works the same way. The organ is the window, the sense is the light passing through, and fire, sun or moon is the bright patch thrown out into the world.
