Hungry Powers Seek Shelter
Aitareya Upanishad 1.2.1
Meaning · English
Once made, these powers fell into this vast ocean. He set hunger and thirst on it. They asked him: 'Find us a place where we can settle and eat food.'
The deities are the powers that have just been made, the ones earlier tied to speech, breath, sight and hearing. Once made, they have nowhere to stand. They drop into a vast ocean with no floor. Then the Self lets hunger and thirst take hold of that ocean, and the powers feel it. Hunger is what turns them into askers. Their request is simple: a place, a footing, from which they can take in food. A power needs a home before it can be fed.
Picture a lamp, a kettle and a radio still in their boxes on a moving truck. Each one works, but none can do its job, because there is no socket to plug into. Set up in a house, they come on. The powers are like that: real and finished, yet unable to take in anything until they have a body to settle into.
