Cow and Horse Refused

Aitareya Upanishad 1.2.2

Meaning · English

He brought them a cow, and they said, "This will not do for us." He brought them a horse, and they said, "This will not do for us."

"He" is the Self, and "them" are the powers it has just made, such as fire, wind and the sun. They had asked for a home where they could settle and eat. The Self offers them a living body, first a cow's, then a horse's. Both times they answer the same way: not adequate. A sound, working animal body is still the wrong fit. The search continues because neither offer can hold what these powers need to do.

Picture a family with a full truck of furniture touring rentals. The first flat is clean and solid, but the sofa will not pass the door. The second is larger, yet there is no room for the piano. Each place is fine in itself. The cow and horse are like that: real homes, wrong size for these tenants.
