The Human Form Accepted

Aitareya Upanishad 1.2.3

Meaning · English

He brought a person before them. They said, 'This one is well made.' A person truly is something well made. He told them, 'Go in, each to your own place.'

The powers of nature, such as fire, wind and sun, need a place to live and eat. Two animals have already fallen short. Now the Self brings them a human being, and they are pleased at once. Then the teacher adds his own remark: a human being is the piece of work that turned out right. Last, the Self tells each power to enter the spot that suits it. Only the human form has room for every one of them, each in its fitting place.

Picture a family house-hunting. Two flats get turned down because each is missing something. The third has a kitchen, a bedroom for every child and a desk by the window, so everyone agrees and goes off to claim a room. The powers are that family, and the human body is the one home with a room for each.
