Food for the Guardians

Aitareya Upanishad 1.3.1

Meaning · English

He looked and considered: these are the worlds, and these are the guardians set over the worlds. Now I will bring forth food for them.

The Self pauses and takes stock. He has made the worlds and placed guardians over them, the powers that watch over each realm. Now he notices what is missing. Anything that lives and works has to be fed, so his next thought is food. 'Looked' is the same act of considering with which he first decided to create. Each step in the story begins with his seeing what is there, then making what comes next. Food comes after the beings who will need it.

Someone sets up a new fish tank. The glass is in place, the water poured, the fish let in. Then they stand back, watch the fish swimming, and reach for the tin of flakes. The tank is the worlds, the fish are the guardians, and the flakes are food, the one thing still needed once something is living there.
