Heat Draws Out Matter
Aitareya Upanishad 1.3.2
Meaning · English
He poured his heat into the waters. From those heated waters a solid shape was born. And the shape that was born is what we eat.
The Self has just decided that the worlds and their guardians need something to live on. So it turns its heat on the waters, the loose, unformed stuff it set out at the start. The word for heating also carries the sense of hard, concentrated effort, the kind of focus that wears a person out. Under that pressure the waters gave up a shape, something solid with edges and weight. The text names that shape plainly: it is food. What feeds a living thing is matter that has taken form.
Warm a pan of milk and leave it a minute. A skin forms across the top, firm enough to lift on a spoon, made from what was only liquid before. Nothing was added. Heat alone pulled a shape out of it. The Self's heat on the waters works that way, and the shape it pulled out is food.
