Speech Cannot Catch Food

Aitareya Upanishad 1.3.3

Meaning · English

Once made, the food turned to run. He tried to catch it with speech and could not. Had speech caught it, saying 'food' would have filled a person.

The food is the solid form that came out of the waters he brooded over. Once it existed, it pulled away and tried to escape, so it had to be caught. The first tool he tried was speech, the power to name things. Speech could not hold it. The proof is ordinary. If naming food were the same as having it, a hungry person could say the word and be full. Nobody is. Words point at food. They do not take it in.

Picture a restaurant menu. It lists every dish in detail, and you can read it aloud, but reading 'lentil soup' leaves your stomach as empty as before. The menu names the food perfectly and delivers none of it. Speech stands in the same place: it can name what feeds us, but naming is not grasping.
