Smelling Is Not Eating

Aitareya Upanishad 1.3.4

Meaning · English

He tried to take hold of the food with breath, and breath could not hold it. Had it worked, a person would be fed just by inhaling near a meal.

Food has just been made, and it slips away. He tries the next power he has: breath, which here means the breath through the nose, the one that draws in air and smell. Breath fails. The verse then gives its reason in one line. If breath could seize food, the scent of a meal would be enough to end hunger. Everyone knows it is not. So breath is crossed off as the power that truly takes food in.

Picture standing at a bakery door early in the morning, the smell of warm bread pouring out. You could stand there breathing it in for ten minutes and still walk away hungry. Breath reaches the food's scent, but nothing of the bread itself gets inside. It touches the meal without taking any of it.
