Sight Leaves Hunger Unmet
Aitareya Upanishad 1.3.5
Meaning · English
He tried to take hold of the food with the eye, and the eye could not hold it. Had sight caught it, merely looking at food would have ended hunger.
Food has just been made, and it is slipping away. He reaches for it with the eye, and the eye fails. The second sentence works as a test. If seeing were the way food is taken in, a glance at a meal would be enough to satisfy hunger. It is not enough, so the eye is not the power that takes food in. Sight can show where food is, its shape and its color, but nothing of it passes into the body.
Picture someone standing at a bakery window, studying the loaves and pastries behind the glass, then walking away just as hungry as before. The window lets the eye reach every crust and crumb, yet not a bite gets through. The eye works like that window, showing the food and leaving it outside.
