Meaning · English
He tried to take hold of it with the ear, and could not. Had the ear been able to hold it, simply hearing about food would have satisfied us.
The one in this story is trying to take hold of food, testing his faculties one at a time. Now he tries the ear, and it fails. The reasoning is simple. If hearing could take in food, then the sound of a meal, or its name said aloud, would be enough to satisfy anyone. It is not. Hearing tells us that food is there. It does not bring that food into the body. Being fed needs a different kind of taking hold.
Think of a cooking show on the radio. The host cracks an egg, butter hisses in the pan, and she names each herb as it goes in. A listener at home can follow every step and still be sitting there hungry. The ear brings across everything about the meal except the part that nourishes.
