Skin Cannot Hold It
Aitareya Upanishad 1.3.7
Meaning · English
He tried to seize it with the skin, and the skin could not hold it. Had touch caught it, a person would be full just from touching food.
The thing being chased is food, and the one chasing it keeps switching tools. This time he reaches out with the skin, the sense of touch, and it slips away again. The reasoning runs backward from ordinary life. If touch could take food in, simply laying hands on a meal would end hunger. It never does. Contact tells us food is there, but contact is not the same as taking it into the body, so the hunger stays.
Picture holding a warm loaf at a bakery counter, feeling its crust and heat through the paper bag, then setting it back down. Your hands know its weight and warmth, and your stomach is still empty. That gap is the verse: touch registers food without feeding anyone.
