The Mind Falls Short
Aitareya Upanishad 1.3.8
Meaning · English
He tried to seize it with the mind, and the mind could not hold it. Had the mind caught it, simply thinking of food would have filled us.
The 'it' is food, and the one reaching for it is the newly made person. He has already tried speech, smell, sight, hearing and touch. Now he tries thought, and thought fails too. The reasoning is simple. If the mind could take hold of food, picturing a meal would end hunger, and it does not. Thinking can plan a meal, remember one and want one. It cannot do the taking-in that keeps a body alive.
A child flips through a cookbook full of glossy photos of bread and stew, reading each recipe closely. An hour later the child closes the book as hungry as before. The pages filled the head with food and left the stomach empty. Holding food in mind, however vividly, is a different act from holding it in the body.
