Tasting All Three

Shiva Sutras 1.11

Meaning · English

The enjoyer of the three is the lord of heroes.

Three words carry this sutra. Tritaya is the triad: waking, dream and deep sleep, the states the earlier sutras described. Bhokta is the enjoyer, from bhuj, to eat or relish. It means one who tastes a thing fully, not one who is swallowed by it. Vira is a hero, and isa is a lord. The heroes are the senses, which go out toward the world and come back in, and which a hero would master. So the sutra says that whoever relishes all three states as they pass is lord over those heroes. The states still come and go. What differs is the one who meets them. An ordinary person is carried off by each in turn and loses the thread. This enjoyer stays in what the tradition calls turya, the fourth, and tastes waking, dream and sleep from there. Because the sutra follows the sutras on dream and on sleep, it completes the set: after naming the three, it names who is not lost in them. It belongs to the shambhava way, where the teaching points straight at Shiva, pure awareness, with no method between. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini takes the enjoyer to be the yogi who knows the three states as the play of his own awareness. Bhaskara's Varttika adds that the delight of the fourth state pours over the other three, and that the senses are the heroes he rules.

A man standing on a bridge watches a river carry three boats under him, one after another: a fishing boat, a barge, a raft. He enjoys each one passing and is not taken downstream. The bridge is the fourth state. The boats are waking, dream and sleep.

1. Tonight, as you lie down, notice the last moment of being awake. Do not try to hold it. Just see that it ends. 2. In the morning, before you move, notice the first moment of waking. Spend about half a minute there. 3. Once during the day, stop for ten seconds in the middle of an ordinary task. Notice that you are present and that the task is happening in front of you.
