Sleep Without Seeing
Shiva Sutras 1.10
Meaning · English
Not discerning: the deep sleep of māyā.
Three words. Aviveka is the lack of viveka, which means telling apart, discerning. Maya is the veil that hides one's own nature from itself. Sausuptam is the state of sound sleep, from su-supta, well asleep. The sutra says: not discerning is the deep sleep of maya. After waking (1.8) and dream (1.9), this is the third state, and the text names it by what is missing. Nothing is known and nothing is imagined. Alongside that, the self is not recognised either. The commentators read it so: in deep sleep the objects of knowing are gone, only faint impressions remain, and the sense of 'I' sits quietly in the breath and the body's subtle bundle. Shiva teaches it as part of the three states, and the sutra belongs to shambhava, the way of direct recognition through the will alone, with no steps. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini takes it as the state where the self's own light is not noticed, so it is veiled. Bhaskara's Varttika adds that this sleep resembles dissolution, and it is the state in which the yogi's practice of attention can be kept up. The point is that sleep is a lapse of noticing, not an absence of the self.
A lamp stays lit in a shuttered room at night. No one in the house sees it, because every window is covered. The light is there the whole time. Deep sleep is the shuttered room: the self does not go out, it simply goes unnoticed.
1. Tonight, as you lie down, let your last thought be a plain wish to stay aware of the moment before sleep takes you. 2. Lie still for two minutes and watch the slide: thoughts thin out and the body grows heavy. 3. On waking, before moving, ask once what was there between falling asleep and now. Do not answer it. Just notice what the question meets. 4. Do this for a week and keep the notes to a line.
