Dream Made of Thoughts
Shiva Sutras 1.9
Meaning · English
Dream is made of the mind's constructs, many and various.
Two words. Svapna is dream, the state of sleep in which pictures and happenings appear. Vikalpa comes from the root kalp, to fashion, with vi, apart or in many ways. A vikalpa is a construct: the mind cuts experience into pieces, names them and arranges them into a scene. The word is plural, so dream is a crowd of such constructs. The sutra says dream is these, with no outer world behind them. The eyes are shut and no shared world is present, yet the scenes feel complete while they last. The sutra before it set down waking as knowing. Waking offers objects that everyone can point to. Dream offers only what the mind itself makes. Shiva teaches it this way so that the student can compare the two states. A student who sees how dream is built can ask how the waking scene is held together. This sutra belongs to the shambhava way, which needs no method. The student only has to see the state as it is. The reading is walking through the three states to find the fourth, turya, which is present in each of them. Kshemaraja, in his Vimarshini, takes dream to be the mind's own play of constructs, made from remembered impressions. Bhaskara's Varttika reads this sutra together with the one before it, as a pair of states.
A cook alone at night, with the market shut, makes a meal from what is already in the cupboard. Nothing comes in from outside. Dream works the same way: the mind builds its scenes from pieces it already holds, and the meal feels real while it is served.
1. Tomorrow morning, before you move or pick up your phone, lie still for one minute and recall any scrap of a dream. 2. Notice how real it felt while it ran, and that no one else was in it. 3. Once during the day, catch yourself rehearsing a conversation in your head. For a moment, see it as a scene your mind has put together. 4. Do nothing about it. Only notice that it was built.
