The story · English
When Prahlada was thrown into the sea, the whole ocean shook with him. It heaved and rose in great waves, and it looked as if the earth itself would be drowned. Hiranyakashipu saw this and turned again to the Daityas. He listed everything that had failed. Fire had not burned the boy. Weapons had not wounded him. Serpents could not bite him, and poison and spells had done nothing. He had beaten the illusions of Samvara, fallen unhurt from the highest mountains, and defeated the elephants of the sky. "Bury him in the deep under rocks," the king said. "If he lies there a thousand years, he may finally lose his life." The Daityas and Danavas obeyed. They piled rock on him until it covered thousands of yojanas of the sea floor.
Prahlada lay on the bottom of the sea, buried under stone, and his mind stayed quiet. He began to praise the one who never decays. "Salutation to you, Pundarikasha. Salutation to you, the supreme Purusha, soul of all worlds, holder of the sharp discus. Salutation to Krishna, friend of Brahmanas and of cows, who does good to the world. Salutation to Govinda." He praised the one who creates the universe as Brahma, keeps it as its preserver, and at the end of the age takes the form of Rudra. "You are the cause of gods and Asuras, of men and beasts, birds and insects, plants and stones, of earth, fire, water, sky and wind. Mind, intellect, time are yours too. You are knowledge and ignorance, truth and untruth, poison and nectar."
He went on. "You are the sacrifice and the actions the Vedas lay down. You enjoy the fruit of every act, and you are the means of it. You are in me, in others, and spread through the whole vast universe. Ascetics meditate on you, priests offer sacrifice to you, and you receive the offerings meant for ancestors and gods. The universe is your great form. The world is smaller than that, and smaller still are the subtle elements. Your subtlest form is the soul within them, and beyond that soul is a supreme one, past all conceiving. Salutation to that Purusottam form." He bowed to Vasudeva, who is in everything and yet apart from all, to the Spirit with no name or form, and to Vishnu, the witness who sees the good and evil in every mind.
"May he be pleased with me," Prahlada said. "May Hari have compassion on me, he in whom the universe is woven like cloth, from whom all things come and by whom all are held up." Then his words changed. "Salutation to him who is also I, who is everywhere, and through whom all things come from me. I am all things, and all things are from me, the eternal one." Parasara told Maitreya what happened next. Prahlada held Vishnu in his thoughts as one with himself, until he forgot his own self and knew nothing else. He thought of himself as the endless, undying supreme soul. Because his mind was now wholly cleansed of sin, Vishnu, whose nature is wisdom, appeared within it.
At the moment Prahlada became one with Vishnu in his meditation, every bond on him was cut, just as he stirred. The deep rose in waves and the monsters in it were terrified. The earth shook, with all her mountains and forests. Prahlada threw off the pile of rocks the Daityas had set on his chest and came up out of the water. He saw the outer world, earth and sky. Then he remembered who he was and knew himself to be Prahlada. With his mind fixed on Vishnu alone, and his speech held steady, the wise boy sang again to the Purusha who has no beginning. "Salutation to you, true wisdom, subtle and vast, changing and unchanging, with form and without it, describable and beyond description."
"You are the home of all qualities," Prahlada sang, "and also without them. You are small and great, seen and unseen, ugliness and beauty. O undying Hari, you are wisdom and ignorance, cause and effect, being and non-being. You hold all that is good and evil, and you are the substance of every element that perishes and every one that does not. Salutation to you, Vasudeva, who are one and many, the first cause of everything." While he was praising Vishnu like this, Hari appeared before him, dressed in yellow. Prahlada stood up with respect. His voice faltered as he said again and again, "Glory to Vishnu." Then he said, "Keshava, you remove the troubles of those who follow you. Be kind to me. Purify me again with the sight of you."
Vishnu answered, "I am pleased with you because your devotion to me has never shaken. Ask me for whatever you wish, Prahlada." Prahlada said, "Through all the thousand births I may be made to pass through, let my faith in you never grow less. Let my devotion be as firm as the attachment foolish people have to the things of this world." Vishnu said, "You already have that devotion, and it will always be the same. Still, ask for a boon." Then Prahlada spoke of his father. "He has treated me cruelly for praising you. He attacked me with weapons, threw me in fire, had serpents bite me, put poison in my food, cast me bound into the sea and buried me under rocks. Lord, by your mercy, free my father from the sin he has done."
Vishnu said, "All this will be done by my mercy. I wish to give you one more boon, son of the Asura. Ask." Prahlada said, "Every wish of mine is already fulfilled, because you have promised that my faith in you will never fall away. Wealth, virtue, desire, even liberation are in the hands of one whose devotion to you is firm." Vishnu said, "Since your devotion is unshaken, you will reach final liberation from rebirth by my mercy." Then he vanished. Prahlada went back to his father and bowed to him. Hiranyakashipu smelled his son's forehead, embraced him, and wept. "Are you alive, my child?" he said. The great Asura was kind to him now, and sorry for what he had done. Prahlada served his father and teacher faithfully.
Later Vishnu, in the form of the man-lion, killed Hiranyakashipu, and Prahlada became king of the Daityas. Because of his goodness he received the splendour of royal rule, great wealth, and many children. When his kingship ended, he was free of the results of both merit and fault, and through his meditation on Vishnu he gained final liberation from future births. Parasara told Maitreya that this was how powerful the devotion of the wise Daitya Prahlada was. Whoever hears his story is quickly freed from sin, and hearing or reading it once clears away the wrongs done in a day and a night. Reading it on the full moon, the new moon, or the eighth or twelfth day of the lunar fortnight earns the merit of giving a cow. As Hari protected Prahlada in every calamity, so he will protect the one who listens to this story always.
