The priests' charms had failed against Prahlada, and King Hiranyakashipu heard of it. He sent for his son and asked him plainly where his strength came from. "Prahlada, you have an extraordinary power. Did you earn it by your own effort, or by magic, or were you born with it?" The boy bowed at his father's feet. "It is not magic, father, and it is not simply my nature. This is a small thing to one in whose mind the undying one lives. I wish no harm to anyone. I do none and I say none. I keep Keshava in my thoughts, the one who lives in every being. How can suffering touch a heart that is clean?"

Hiranyakashipu was sitting at the top of his palace. His face darkened with anger as he listened. He turned to his attendants. "Throw this vicious boy down from here. The palace is a hundred yojanas high. Let him land on the mountain peaks and be broken against the rocks." The Daityas and Danavas took the boy and hurled him over the edge. He fell with Hari held in his mind. Earth, who bears the whole world, came to meet him and caught him as he fell, because he was devoted to Keshava, the protector of the world. When the king looked, the boy was unhurt. Not one of his bones was broken.

Hiranyakashipu then called for Samvara, the foremost of all who knew charms. "We have not managed to kill this wicked boy. You know many spells. You kill him." "At once, O king of the Daityas," said Samvara. "Watch my power of illusion. I can invent thousands upon thousands of tricks." He turned all his magic on Prahlada. Prahlada looked at every creature with the same even eye, and his heart stayed calm, without malice even toward Samvara. He simply meditated on the destroyer of Madhu. The Great God sent the blazing discus Sudarshana to guard him. It swept through Samvara's illusions, and by the end thousands of them had been broken.

The king then spoke to the withering wind. "At my command, go quickly and destroy this wicked boy." The wind said, "So be it," and entered the boy's body, cold and cutting and impossible to bear. Prahlada felt it inside him. He turned his mind again to the great upholder of the earth. Janarddana, present in his thoughts, grew angry and drank the dreadful wind down. The wind was destroyed. All the charms had failed and the wind was gone. Prahlada went back to the house of his teacher. There the teacher taught him each day the science of kingship that Usanas had composed for the use of rulers.

In time the teacher found Prahlada well trained in every branch of statecraft, and humble besides. He went to the king. "Lord of the Daityas, your son Prahlada now knows the principles of government as the descendant of Bhrigu set them down." Hiranyakashipu called the boy in. "Tell me how a king should treat friends and enemies. How should he act in times of advance, decline and peace? How should he deal with ministers, courtiers, officers, spies, subjects, doubtful allies and open foes? Whom should he ally with, whom fight, what fortress should he build, how are the hill and forest tribes brought under rule, how are troubles at home put down? Say what you have read. I want to hear your mind."

Prahlada bowed to his father's feet and folded his hands. "I was taught all of this and I learned it. But I do not accept all of it. They say there are four ways to master friends and foes: kind words, gifts, punishment and sowing division. Father, do not be angry, but I know neither friends nor enemies. Where nothing needs to be done, why look for the means? Govinda is the self of all beings, and the lord of this whole world. Vishnu lives in you and in me and in every creature. What use is it to say, this one is a friend, that one an enemy? Such learning is false and tiresome. A boy takes a firefly for fire, and ignorance takes itself for knowledge. Real action frees us. Real knowledge leads us to liberation. The rest only wears us out.

"Kingdoms and riches come from goodness stored up in earlier lives. Greatness is not won by effort; destiny grants it. Kingdoms fall even to fools and cowards. So whoever wants greatness should seek goodness, and whoever wants release should look on all beings with an even eye. Gods, men, animals, birds and serpents are all forms of the one Vishnu." Hiranyakashipu rose from his seat in a rage and kicked his son in the chest. He wrung his hands as if he would destroy the universe. "Viprachita, Rahu, Vali, tie this boy up in serpents and throw him into the deep. Do not wait. Otherwise the Daityas, the Danavas and all other people will take up this fool's teaching. We have stopped him again and again, and still he sings our enemy's praises." The Daityas obeyed. They bound Prahlada with ropes and threw him into the water.
