The story · English
The Danavas had been watching Prahlada, and what they saw frightened them. Out of fear they went to the king and reported it. Hiranyakashipu sent for his cooks. "My vile and wicked son is teaching others his impious doctrines," he said. "Kill him without his knowing. Mix deadly poison into all his food, and do not hesitate to destroy that wretch." The cooks did as they were told. They set the poisoned food before Prahlada. He said the name of the imperishable one, mixed the poison into his meal, and ate it all. He was not harmed in body or in mind. The name of the endless one had beaten the poison.
The cooks saw the poison digested and were stricken with fear. They went to the king of the Daityas. "We gave your son the deadliest poison," they said, "and he digested it along with his food." Hiranyakashipu turned to the priests of the Daityas. "Hurry," he said. "Perform the rites that will destroy him, and do it quickly." The priests went to Prahlada and found him humble. They spoke gently. "You were born in the family of Brahma, famous in the three worlds, and you are the son of Hiranyakashipu. Why depend on the gods? Your father is the refuge of all people. Be the same. Stop praising the enemy of your family. A father is the most venerable of all teachers."
Prahlada answered them with respect. "What you say is true. The family of Marichi is famous in the three worlds. My father has reached the foremost place in the world by his actions. And a father is a teacher to be honored with care. I don't think I have offended in this. But you ask why I seek shelter in the eternal. I do not know how that question can be sound." He was silent for a while, to uphold their dignity. Then he smiled. "Virtue, desire, wealth and freedom are the four aims of human life. Is it vain to worship the source of all four? Marichi, Daksha and others gained their desires. Others, through wisdom and contemplation, knew his essence and were freed. You are all my teachers. Say good or evil, my understanding is small."
The priests said, "Boy, you were about to be burned by fire, and we saved you, thinking you would never say such words again. If you do not give up this delusion at our word, we will perform rites for your destruction." Prahlada said, "Who kills whom, and who protects whom? Each one is his own destroyer or preserver, according to whether he follows evil or good." The priests were furious. By their magic they made a female form wrapped in flame. The earth shook under her tread. In her rage she drove a dart into Prahlada's chest. The fiery dart broke into a hundred pieces and fell to the ground. Even a thunderbolt shatters against the chest of one in whose heart Hari lives. The magic then turned on the priests who had made it, and it killed them all.
Prahlada saw them burning. "Save them, O Krishna, O Eternal," he cried, and went to them. "You fill the universe and you made it, Janarddana. Save these Brahmanas from the flame their own spells raised. Vishnu is present in all creatures, so let these priests live. I never counted fire as my enemy. I looked with friendship on everyone who came to kill me: those who gave me poison, those who lit the fire, the elephants of the sky, the serpents that bit me. I held no malice toward any of them. If this is true, let the priests be restored to life." As he said it, they were touched, and they rose up unhurt. They said to the humble boy, "May you have long life, unshaken strength and courage." Then the priests went to the king of the Daityas and told him everything.
