Prahlada spoke to the Daitya boys, and he did not soften what he had to say. "Where is this body, really? It is a bundle of phlegm and other humours. Where is its beauty now, its grace? Anyone who loves this thing of flesh, blood, matter, urine, marrow and bone could take delight even in hell." He reminded them how pleasure works. Fire feels good because of cold, water because of thirst, food because of hunger. Everything pleases by its opposite. "Whoever takes a wife brings that much pain into his chest. The more dear relations a man gathers, the deeper the thorns of worry go into his heart. And a man with a full house is afraid wherever he goes that it will be lost, burned or stolen." Birth itself is agony, he said, and the dying suffer Death's tortures and then the pain of entering a womb again. There is no pleasure even in the embryo. "So you must admit the world is full of misery."
Then Prahlada turned to the one thing he could offer them. "I tell you truly, in this ocean of the world, crowded with miseries, Vishnu is your only support. Do not think you are only boys and so cannot understand. The spirit living in your bodies is eternal. Birth, youth and decay belong to the body, not to the soul." He described how people put it off. "I am a child now. When I am young I will work for my own good. I am young now. When I am old I will work for my soul. Now I am old, my senses have failed, and I cannot try. What shall I do, with a mind as spoiled as mine? I did nothing when I could." So men who long for knowledge are pulled about by empty hopes and never reach release. The ignorant play as boys, chase the world as young men, and wake to find old age on them.
"So let the soul work for its own good even in childhood," Prahlada said, "whatever the age of the body. That is what I tell you. If you doubt it, then for my sake, think of Vishnu, who frees us from every bond. What trouble is there in remembering him? When remembered, he gives people prosperity. Think of him day and night and your sins will come to an end. Keep your mind on him, who is present in all beings, and you will laugh at every trouble." Then he spoke of hatred. The whole world is under a threefold affliction. "What wise person would hate beings who all deserve compassion? If others prosper and I cannot, why should I be spiteful toward them? I should be glad for their happiness. Putting down malice is its own reward."
Prahlada went on. Even people who nurse malice against their enemies, he said, are pitied by the wise, because they are lost in delusion. "Daityas, I have set myself apart from other creatures only to explain to you why hatred should be held back. Now hear briefly the duties of those who come near the Deity. This whole world is Vishnu's own appearance, and he is one with every being. The wise therefore see no difference between themselves and other creatures. So let us give up the angry passions of our race and strive for perfect release." That release, he said, lies beyond the power of the gods of fire, sun, moon and wind, of Indra and the lord of the sea, of Siddhas, Rakshasas, the Daitya chief, serpents, Kinnaras, men and beasts. Disease, hatred, malice, passion and desire cannot touch it.
"That release cannot be destroyed by anyone else," Prahlada said. "It is pure and everlasting, and it belongs to the one who fixes his mind on Kesava. I tell you truly, you will find no satisfaction by going round and round through the turnings of this world. Daityas, look on all creatures with an even mind. That is the worship of the one who never decays. When he is pleased, what is out of reach? Wealth, pleasure and the other worldly goods are small things beside him. Go to the tree of true wisdom, which never runs dry, and you will surely gather precious fruit from it." With these words Prahlada finished what he had to say to the Daitya boys.
