The Herb That Saved Lakshmana

Hanuman Chalisa 13

Meaning · English

You brought the life-giving herb and brought Lakshmana back to life. Rama, hero of the Raghus, full of joy, drew you to his heart.

Lakshmana lies struck down on the battlefield at Lanka, and Rama is grieving for his brother. Hanuman goes to the far mountains for one herb whose name means 'life-giver'. When he cannot tell it from the others, he lifts the whole peak and carries it back. Lakshmana breathes again. The second half turns to Rama, called here the hero of Raghu's line. He is so glad that he pulls Hanuman to his chest. Both Valmiki and the Ramcharitmanas tell this rescue.

Picture a child sent to the shed for the right spanner while a parent waits under a car. Unsure which one, the child does not stand there guessing but hauls the whole heavy toolbox back. That is Hanuman with the mountain: a helper who would rather carry too much than let the one who needs it wait.
