Every Hard Task Made Easy

Hanuman Chalisa 22

दुर्गम काज जगत के जेते। सुगम अनुग्रह तुम्हरे तेते॥

However many tasks in the world are hard to accomplish, every one of them becomes easy through your grace.

Durgam is a road that is hard to get through, the word for a fortress or a wild pass. Sugam is the opposite, an easy road. Kaj is a task. Jete and tete answer each other: as many as there are, that many. Anugrah is favour, kindness shown from above. So the line puts all the world's hard tasks on one side and Hanuman's favour on the other, and says the counts match. Every hard task has its grace. None is left over.

A heavy trunk dragged across a floor scrapes and barely moves. Set the same trunk on a wheeled trolley and one person rolls it to the door. The weight has not changed. What changed is what it rests on. Hanuman's favour works the same way: the hard task keeps its weight, and his help carries it.

संसार में जितने भी काम कठिन हैं, वे सब आपकी कृपा से सरल हो जाते हैं।

"दुर्गम" वह मार्ग है जिसे पार करना कठिन हो, यह शब्द किसी किले या बीहड़ घाटी के लिए आता है। "सुगम" इसका उलटा है, आसान मार्ग। "काज" का अर्थ है काम। "जेते" और "तेते" एक-दूसरे का उत्तर देते हैं: जितने हैं, उतने ही। "अनुग्रह" का अर्थ है कृपा, ऊपर से की गई दया। इस प्रकार यह पंक्ति संसार के सारे कठिन कामों को एक ओर रखती है और हनुमान की कृपा को दूसरी ओर, और कहती है कि दोनों की गिनती बराबर है। हर कठिन काम के लिए उनकी कृपा है। कोई भी बाकी नहीं छूटता।

फ़र्श पर घसीटा गया भारी संदूक रगड़ खाता है और मुश्किल से खिसकता है। वही संदूक पहियों वाली ट्रॉली पर रख दें तो एक व्यक्ति उसे लुढ़काकर दरवाज़े तक ले जाता है। बोझ नहीं बदला। बदला वह है, जिस पर वह टिका है। हनुमान की कृपा भी इसी तरह काम करती है: कठिन काम का बोझ वैसा ही रहता है, और उनकी सहायता उसे उठा ले जाती है।
