Rama's Ring Across the Sea

Hanuman Chalisa 21

Meaning · English

Holding the Lord's ring in your mouth, you leaped across the ocean. There is no wonder in that.

Prabhu is the Lord, Rama. Mudrika is his ring. When the search for Sita began, Rama gave Hanuman his ring so she would know the messenger truly came from him. Both Valmiki and the Ramcharitmanas tell of this ring and of Hanuman crossing the sea to Lanka. The Chalisa adds its own picture: he carried it in his mouth. Then Tulsidas says achraj nahin, no wonder. He is not shrinking the leap. For one who carried Rama's ring, the ocean was no barrier.

A child is sent to a neighbour's house with a note signed by his mother. The neighbour has never trusted the boy with anything, but she knows the handwriting, so she opens the door. The ring worked the same way. It was Rama's sign, and it made Hanuman's word believable to Sita in Lanka.
