The Sun as Fruit

Hanuman Chalisa 20

Meaning · English

The sun stood a thousand ages of leagues away, and you swallowed it, taking it for a sweet fruit.

Jug is an age, sahasr is a thousand, and jojan is a measure of distance, each one several miles long. Put together, they name a distance too great to picture. Bhanu is the sun. Madhur phal means sweet fruit, and lilyo means swallowed. Tulsidas sets two things side by side. The sun was impossibly far away. Yet the baby Hanuman saw it only as something ripe and good to eat, and he went and took it.

A toddler by a window sees the orange glow of a streetlamp and grabs at it, sure it is a fruit within reach. His hand closes on air. Hanuman made the same guess about the sun, but his reach crossed the whole distance. The verse keeps the child's innocent mistake and gives it the strength to succeed.
