The verse and its meaning · Hanuman Chalisa · Hanuman Chalisa — Rama's Servant
Lanka's New King
Hanuman Chalisa 19
Meaning · English
Vibhishana heeded your counsel and became lord of Lanka. The whole world knows it.
Mantr here is counsel, advice given in confidence. It is not a chanted formula. Mana means heeded. Vibhishana was Ravana's own brother. He took Hanuman's word and became lankesvar, lord of Lanka, and everyone knows how that turned out. The Ramcharitmanas tells how Hanuman, searching Lanka for Sita, meets Vibhishana there and speaks to him of Rama. Vibhishana later crosses over to Rama, who names him king of Lanka. So Hanuman wins Rama an ally from inside the enemy's own house.
At a crowded station, a stranger points a stuck traveller to the right platform, then steps back into the crowd. The traveller boards and arrives. The stranger's name is on no ticket. Hanuman's part was that pointing: a few words to Vibhishana. The crown that followed was Rama's gift and Vibhishana's own choice.
