A Throne for Sugriva

Hanuman Chalisa 18

Meaning · English

You did Sugriva a great kindness: you brought him to meet Rama, and gave him the royal seat.

Upkar is a kindness done for another. Sugriva was a monkey king in exile, hiding on a mountain from his brother Vali, who had taken his throne. Hanuman went to meet two strangers in the forest, Rama and Lakshmana, and brought them to Sugriva. That meeting made a friendship. Rama ended Vali's rule, Sugriva sat again on the raj pad, the king's seat, and Rama gained the allies who would search for Sita. Valmiki and the Ramcharitmanas both tell it.

A friend at a crowded wedding takes two people by the elbow and says, you two should meet. She marries no one and signs nothing. Years later, both families trace everything back to that moment. Hanuman's part was that walk across the room: Sugriva's crown and Rama's allies both began with his introduction.
