Beyond Every Poet's Telling
Hanuman Chalisa 17
Meaning · English
Yama, Kubera and the guardians of the directions cannot tell it all; how then could poets and scholars ever tell it?
Yama is the lord of death, who keeps account of every life. Kubera keeps the treasure of the gods. The guardians of the directions each watch over one quarter of the world. Between them they see and record everything, yet even they cannot finish telling Hanuman's glory. Kabi are poets and kobid are learned scholars. If those who watch all of creation fall short, a human poet with a pen falls shorter still. Tulsidas is a poet, so he places himself in that group.
Picture someone on a beach with a notebook, trying to count the waves as they come in. By the time one is written down, ten more have broken. The pen is not the problem; the sea does not stop. Hanuman's glory is the sea, and every teller, god or poet, holds the notebook.
