Hanuman Chalisa 16
Meaning · English
Sanaka and the others, Brahma and the gods, the chief among sages, Narada, Sarada, and with them the lord of serpents.
This is a list of singers, and the sentence is not finished yet. Sankadik is Sanaka and his brothers, the four sages who stay children forever. Brahmadi is Brahma and those after him. Munisa means the great sages. Narad is Narada, who wanders the worlds singing. Sarad is Sarada, goddess of speech. Ahisa, lord of serpents, is Shesha, whose thousand heads recall the thousand mouths of the line before. Each one is a voice whose work is praise, gathered here for Hanuman's fame in serving Rama.
Think of the credits at the end of a long film, name after name rolling up the screen, the biggest names first. Tulsidas does the same with Hanuman's praise: the oldest sages, the creator, the goddess of speech, the serpent with a thousand heads, all scrolling past in one line. And the list is still not done.
