Thousand Mouths, One Embrace

Hanuman Chalisa 15

Meaning · English

"A thousand mouths sing your fame," saying this, the husband of Shri drew you to his neck and held you close.

Rama is still praising Hanuman, and the praise grows past what one voice can carry. Sahas badan means a thousand mouths. The picture is Shesha, the serpent with a thousand heads, every mouth singing Hanuman's jas, his good name. Then Rama stops speaking and acts. Shripati, husband of Shri, is Rama as the lord of Lakshmi. Kanth lagavain is pulling someone in at the neck. It is not a pat on the shoulder but a full embrace, the kind kept for family.

A father at the school gate starts telling his son how proud he is. He stops halfway and pulls the boy into a hug that lifts him off his feet. The words were true but not enough. Rama does the same. He names a praise too large for one mouth, then lets the embrace say the rest.
