Meaning · English
Struck by three kinds of suffering, we want to know what would remove it. If you say the search is pointless because visible remedies exist: no, for they do not work for certain, nor for good.
Why study philosophy at all? Samkhya, the school of the Samkhya Karika, starts from pain. Everyone is struck by suffering, and it comes in three kinds. The first arises from within. Gaudapada names bodily illness, such as fever, and grief of the mind, such as losing someone loved or being stuck with someone disliked. The second comes from other beings, which Gaudapada sorts into four by how they are born, from womb, egg, moisture or sprout: people, animals, snakes, insects, even stationary things. The third comes from powers beyond our control, which Gaudapada links to the gods: cold, heat, wind, rain, lightning. Once struck, a person wants to know what would end it. An objector replies that the search is pointless, because obvious remedies exist. Gaudapada lists medicine for the body, gaining what we love and avoiding what we hate for the mind, and protection against other beings. Samkhya says no, for two reasons. These remedies do not work for certain: medicine, for example, sometimes fails. And they do not work for good: the pain, for example, comes back. So a deeper enquiry is justified: one that would end suffering surely and permanently.
Think of a painkiller taken for a toothache. Often it dulls the throb. Sometimes it barely touches it. Either way, a few hours later the ache is back, because the decay is still there. The visible remedies work like that tablet: they are uncertain, and they wear off. Samkhya wants the equivalent of fixing the tooth, a remedy that removes the cause so the pain does not return.
The threefold sorting holds up well as a rough map. Pain from within corresponds to illness and mental distress. Pain from other beings covers injury, infection and conflict. Pain from outside forces covers climate and natural disaster. Modern medicine has made many remedies far more reliable than Samkhya could have known, so its first point, that cures do not always work, is weaker today. Its second point still stands. Chronic illness, ageing, grief and death remain. Psychology also describes hedonic adaptation: the lift from good things tends to fade back toward a person's usual mood. Whether suffering can be ended permanently is a question science does not settle either way. It lies outside what experiments can test, so it stays open.
