The remedy learned from scripture is like the visible one, for it is bound up with impurity, with wearing out, and with inequality. Its opposite is better: it comes from clearly knowing the manifest, the unmanifest and the knower.

The question carries over from before. If everyday remedies cannot end suffering for good, what about the Vedic rites, which promise heaven and even deathlessness? Samkhya answers that the scriptural route, called anushravika ('what is heard'), is no better than the visible one. It has three flaws. The first is impurity. Gaudapada's commentary reads this as the harm built into sacrifice: animals are killed, so the merit is mixed with wrong. The second is wearing out. The reward is used up in time, and Gaudapada notes that many Indras and gods have already come and gone. The third is inequality. Rewards come in grades, and seeing someone hold more brings fresh pain. The better way is the opposite of both routes. It is knowledge that clearly tells apart three things. The manifest (vyakta) is everything nature has produced, including intellect, ego, mind, the senses and the physical elements. The unmanifest (avyakta) is prakriti, nature in its unformed root state. The knower is purusha, pure consciousness. For Samkhya, freedom comes from seeing this difference, not from doing anything.

Think of a newer, faster phone. For a week it feels like the end of wanting. Then the battery starts to fade, a friend gets a newer model, and the factory that built it has left its waste somewhere. Samkhya sees heaven earned by rites the same way: a better purchase, still marked by cost, decline and comparison.

Two of the three flaws have close modern matches. Psychologists describe hedonic adaptation: gains in comfort or status lift mood for a while, then the lift fades back toward where it was. They also find that people judge their lot partly against others, so a reward that is merely bigger can sour when someone else's is bigger still. The impurity point is ethical rather than factual, and many people today share the unease about gaining at another creature's cost. The positive claim is harder to test. Some modern therapies hold that changing how one sees one's own thoughts eases distress, which is a loose echo. But Samkhya's cure depends on consciousness being wholly distinct from matter. Most neuroscientists and physicalist philosophers reject that kind of dualism, while the hard problem of consciousness keeps the question open.
